STERKFONTIEN CAVES & MAROPENG MUSEUM (Entrance Included)


Visitors have to take a mineshaft 40-metres down into the earth to reach the Sterkfontein Cave- an enormous single chamber, decorated by some 15-metre high rock formations. The cave is 2 200 million years old and formations include rim stone pools, caves pearls, stalactites, stalagmites and famous ‘ Madonna’ carved by nature into the rock.

The new scientific exhibition centre showcases a reconstruction of a mined cave – versus a pristine cave – cave formations and geology, early life forms, mammals and hominid fossils, among other topics. It describes in detail important finds such as “Mrs Ples”, the “Taung Child” and “Little Foot”, as well as providing information about fossilisation, palaeobotany and landscapes. World-acclaimed and award-winning palaeoartist, John Gurche, whose exhibits can be seen at the Smithsonian Institute, the Field Museum and the American Museum of Natural History in New York and who worked on the film Jurassic Park, has produced all the lifelike hominid illustrations, from the 7-million-year-old Toumai fossil from Chad, through to modern humans.

We stop for photos of the magnificent African sunset. After dark, your guide will use a powerful spotlight to locate nocturnal animals. Dinner in the Boma around a crackling fire will be a typical South African meal. Overnight in your fascinating treehouse or comfortable chalet.

DAY TWO:

At the Orpen Gate of Kruger National Park we board our open game viewer that provides unbeatable opportunities for a total sensual wildlife experience. These vehicles offer superior viewing and the absence of windows allows you to hear and smell the African bush and its denizens. Your experienced guide will show you many animals and birds that frequent this wildlife paradise. The Orpen/Satara region has open plains with numerous herds of giraffe, zebra and antelope that attract the big cats. Dinner and overnight at the resort.

DAY THREE:

Early morning game walk accompanied by your armed ranger. You will attempt to get close to the numerous animals that have made their home at the camp especially nyala, buffalo and rhino. After breakfast, you drive via the Blyde River Canyon on your return to Africa Centre, Johannesburg where you arrive in the late afternoon. Airport drop-off by arrangement.

DAY THREE:

Full day on an open Gameviewer in Kruger Park. Your ranger will attempt to show you all of the Big Five. The area we visit has excellent visibility of open plains, home to numerous herds of zebra, giraffe, wildebeest and other antelope, that attract many lions. Elephant, buffalo and rhino are also abundant.

DAY FOUR:

Early morning game walk accompanied by an armed ranger who will show you spoor and droppings of animals big and small. The walk concentrates on plants, birds and insects that are not normally appreciated from a vehicle. From time to time, dangerous animals such as Buffalo, Black Rhino and Leopard are encountered. After breakfast, we drive via the Three Rondawels of the Blyde River Canyon en route to Johannesburg where we arrive in the late afternoon. Airport drop-off by arrangement.

Awaken before sunrise for a cuppa and rusks. We drive to a remote area where our armed ranger conducts a  Big Five Game Walk. Adrenalin rushes will be acute, not with standing the presence of your armed field guide. Return to for brunch. Transfer to accommodation. After we board an open game viewer for a  game drive on the  reserve where we have a good chance of encountering Black and White Rhino as well as Buffalo. Dinner and a good nights sleep.

DAY THREE:

Full day on an open game viewer in the Kruger National Park. Your ranger will attempt to show you all of the Big Five. The area we visit has excellent visibility of open plains, home to numerous herds of zebra, giraffe, wildebeest and other antelope, that attract many lions. Elephant, buffalo and rhino are also abundant.

DAY FOUR:

Morning visit to Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre for orphaned and injured animals. You will get up close and personal to lions, leopards, cheetah and other animals that are cared for in this conservation-minded centre. After lunch at Cheetah Inn, you have the afternoon to rest or swim. At 17h00 board the open game viewer for a sunset drive on the Game Reserve.

DAY FIVE:

Another full day of game viewing and bird watching in Kruger National Park. Your experienced guide will show you  many animals and birds that frequent this life paradise. The diversity of mammals found in Kruger National Park  is unsurpassed anywhere in Africa.

DAY SIX:
